The engine is essential to all generator operations, including diesel generators. This is where combustion takes places and generates mechanical energy, which is transformed into electrical energy. The power output and sound of the engine can all be used to gauge the efficiency or performance of the engine. For example, excessive vibrations could signal a problem. Use your users' manual to confirm that the coolant level, oil pressure, and fluid levels are all at their required levels.
Just like other diesel engines, the exhaust system of a diesel generator produces hot gases, which are highly toxic. The gases must be properly channeled out of the engine. If this doesn't happen, then the gases may damage components of the generator due to overheating, or poison you. Here are the two major checks when inspecting the exhaust system:
- Leaks – check the different parts of the exhaust, such as gaskets, pipes, and connections, for leaks.
- Excessive smoke – excessive smoke, especially when starting, may indicate air quality issues, such as those caused by dirty filters.
When it comes to the fuel system, the main thing to look out for is possible leaks. Some of the specific parts to concentrate on include these four:
- The pipe that connects the fuel tank to the engine
- Ventilation pipe that prevents build-up of pressure in the fuel tank
- Overflow connection that prevents spilling of fuel during refilling
Check all these parts of the generator for cracks or holes. Such cracks not only waste fuel, but they may also lead to fire outbreaks. For this reason, damage to this part of the generator must be repaired as soon as possible.
The main purpose of a generator is to produce electrical energy. The part of the generator that does this is known as the alternator, which contains an assembly of moving and stationary parts. Here are some of the things to focus on when examining the alternator:
- The housings – most parts of the alternator, which are conductors, are housed in non-conductor materials, such as plastic. Confirm that the housings are intact; they can be exposed by normal wear and tear.
- Wiring – confirm that all the connecting wires are properly insulated and continuous.
